Ingredients:
- For the Modak Filling:
- 1 cup khoya (mawa), grated
- ¼ cup powdered sugar
- 1 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
- 2 tbsp grated fresh coconut (optional)
- 1-2 tbsp chopped cashews, almonds, and pistachios
- ½ tsp cardamom powder
- A pinch of saffron strands (optional)
- For the Modak Shell:
- 1 cup rice flour
- 1 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
- ½ cup water
- ½ tsp cardamom powder
- A pinch of salt
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Filling:
- Heat a pan on medium heat, add ghee.
- Add the grated khoya and cook it for 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it softens and turns golden.
- Add the grated coconut, cardamom powder, and chopped nuts. Stir well.
- Add the powdered sugar and mix until the sugar dissolves.
- Cook the mixture for another 3-4 minutes, stirring continuously until the filling thickens and becomes a sticky consistency.
- Turn off the heat and let it cool.
2. Prepare the Modak Shell:
- Heat water in a pan and add ghee and a pinch of salt.
- Gradually add the rice flour, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
- Continue stirring until the dough begins to come together. Cover the pan and let it sit for 5 minutes to soften.
- After it cools slightly, knead the dough until smooth and pliable. If needed, apply a little ghee to make it softer.
3. Shape the Modaks:
- Grease your hands with a little ghee.
- Take a small portion of the rice flour dough and flatten it into a round disc with your fingers.
- Place a small amount of the khoya filling in the center of the disc.
- Carefully pinch the edges of the dough around the filling and shape it into a modak, gathering the top to form a peak.
- Repeat with the rest of the dough and filling.
4. Steam the Modaks:
- Grease a steaming plate or idli stand and arrange the modaks on it.
- Steam the modaks for about 10-12 minutes or until they become glossy and firm to the touch.
- Once done, remove them from the steamer and let them cool slightly.
Serve:
- Mava Modaks are ready to be served! You can offer them to Lord Ganesha or enjoy them as a sweet treat. Optionally, you can drizzle a little ghee on top before serving.
Enjoy your Mava Modaks!
